Our Story
I made the first one in 2011 and sold it at a market in Colorado that same year. They are still made by hand, one seam at a time, now between Colorado and Arizona.
The seam was the whole idea
A shawl falls off. Anyone who has worn one to an event has spent the evening hitching it back onto a shoulder. And a scarf has to be tied, which most people never learn to do well.
So I stopped cutting and started folding. One piece of fabric, folded once, joined with a single seam, the rest left open. The gap between the fold and that seam is where your head goes. Nothing is cut, nothing fastens, and it does not have to be wrapped. You pull it on and it stays where you put it.
The part I did not expect is what that one seam does. Move it to the front, the side or the back and the same piece becomes three different garments. That was a real departure in 2011, and there are still only a handful of us making them this way.
The business runs on the show circuit
Art fairs in Estes Park and Sedona, music festivals in New Mexico and California, holiday markets right through November and December. If you already own one of these, there is a good chance you bought it from me at a booth, and a decent chance I remember the conversation.
Which is why the range works the way it does
People at a booth choose with their hands and their eyes, not from a size chart. So every pattern comes in a spread of colorways, everything is one size, it goes on over the head, and the only real decision left is which colorway is yours.
One size, and it flatters more people than it fits. It does not fit the body, it wears from the shoulders, so it skims rather than clings. Most of us want to cover the midsection or cover the back, and this does both without being asked.
No two of them are the same
Each one is sewn by hand and the weave varies from bolt to bolt, so small variations come with the territory. I would rather have those than the alternative.
